    Cai Yuanpei (1868 – 1940)

    An influential Chinese educator and democratic revolutionary, Cai Yuanpei (11 January 1868– 5 March 1940) was a native of Shanyin (today’s Shaoxing, Zhejiang Province).

  • He passed the highest level of imperial examination in 1890 as a top candidate, and after the First Sino-Japanese War, began to study Western learning as a way to improve education in China. In 1902, Cai co-founded the Chinese Education Association with some like-minded scholars including Zhang Binglin, while establishing patriotic societies and all-girls schools and preaching democratic revolution.

    In 1904, he organized the Restoration Association, a revolutionary group against the Qing regime. He went to study in Germany in 1907, but returned to China shortly after the Wuchang Uprising in 1911 and headed the education ministry of the new provisional Republic in Nanjing.

    In 1913, he went to France and co-founded a work-study program for Chinese students with Wu Yuzhang.
