Muriel Spark, a prominent figure in world literature during the second half of the 20th century, was born Muriel Sarah Camberg on February 1, 1918, in the capital of Scotland, Edinburgh, United Kingdom.
Her father came from a Jewish family from Lithuania, while her mother was an English Protestant from Hertfordshire. Spark received her education at James Gillespie's School for Girls and later attended writing courses while working as a secretary.
